The story of Kunon began in August 2021 when author Umikaze Minamino first posted the web novel on Shosetsuka ni Narou, quickly gaining a dedicated following.

The goal of the blind boy, Kunon, is to create new eyes using water magic. After just five months of learning magic, Kunon surpasses his teacher’s skills, and in this first-ever challenge, his talents blossom even further. This is the start of a magical quest fantasy about a blind genius boy who opens up new worlds with his curiosity.

The series was then published in print format starting in March 2022 under Kadokawa’s Enterbrain label, with stunning illustrations by Laruha. The light novel has since established itself as a fan favorite in the competitive Japanese light novel market.

The Manga Adaptation

Building on its success, “Kunon the Sorcerer Can See” also received a manga adaptation by La-na, which began serialization in April 2022. This complementary medium has introduced the story to even more readers who appreciate the visual storytelling approach.

Voice Cast Announcement

The production has revealed some of its impressive voice cast:

  • Saori Hayami will voice the protagonist Kunon. Hayami is known for her roles in series like “Attack on Titan” and “My Hero Academia,” bringing her considerable talent to this new project.
  • Maaya Uchida will also join the cast, adding her vocal skills to the ensemble. Uchida has previously lent her voice to characters in “Re:Zero” and “Demon Slayer.”

Hayami commented on the work,

“I was thrilled to see how a shy boy discovers the light through one incident and undergoes a change that amazed those around him.

I think the tempo of the conversations between the characters and the somewhat comical atmosphere can only be experienced in this work.”

Regarding the character she plays, Uchida said,

“Iko is full of energy, always cheerful, and supports Kunon, while having a huge influence on him. I’m looking forward to seeing what kind of person Kunon will grow into with her constant love and humor!”

Fans will have the opportunity to get an early look at the anime at the AnimeJapan 2025 special stage event. On March 23, Saori Hayami and Maaya Uchida will appear at the “Pia Presents TV Anime Kunon The Sorcerer Can See & Fermat’s Cuisine Special Stage” to discuss the upcoming series and share insights into their roles, one redditor commented on how representing people who are blind anime will be great to look forward,

“I don’t know anything about this, but it would be cool if it turns out to be a good show about people dealing with disabilities.

There’s not a ton of anime where their main characters have a disability, so it’d be cool if this turned out to be good and becomes a good show for representing people who are blind”

Another user replied,

Yeah, I’m sure they’d love to watch it!
